TWG 13: Knowledge building/knowledge creation in the school classroom and beyond
Knowledge building has been a prominent theme in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) research, and in the learning sciences (ISLS). Teachers are encouraged to develop their classrooms into knowledge-building communities (KBCs) in order to develop students’ technology literacy, deep understanding and knowledge creation competencies. These three educational goals were those stressed by the UNESCO ICT framework for teachers (2011). OECD’s PISA has more recently evaluated students’ collaborative problem-solving skills and creative thinking, two areas of research related to knowledge-building. Considered an advanced pedagogy for teachers incorporating technology into their teaching, the working group will examine how knowledge building might be aligned with future-looking local and regional educational policies and assessment tools? Challenges for the group will be to build on the established research to identify what are exemplars and what is required for better alignments.
